September Didn't Get the Memo

Good evening, Athens and North Georgia! If you went outside today, you noticed that it does not feel like fall (even if the changeover to September would tend to give us hope that maybe fall is on the way). In fact, we soared into the mid-90s today region-wide—good for roughly 6° F above average in Athens.

Looking toward tomorrow, we unfortunately expect this warm trend to continue as a strong surface high-pressure system and upper-level ridge sit almost directly overhead. Temperatures overnight will likely remain a bit above average region-wide, with an expected low around 72 for Athens and 71 for Canton. During the day, we expect temperatures to soar to 96 in Athens and 95 in Canton. Given the sinking motion in place from our surface high, we also do not expect any notable precipitation tomorrow. There is a very slight chance of precipitation across north Georgia; however, these showers would be extremely isolated in nature.

Going forward, the weather story will remain similar through the end of the week: hot and mostly dry (although precipitation could start ticking up south of Atlanta into Friday). Given the prolonged bout of warmer weather — and a renewed surge of moisture as we get later into the week — heat-related issues will be a concern throughout the week. As such, be sure to check in on friends and pets that might spend a lot of time outdoors tomorrow, avoid outdoor activities during the afternoon if you can, and be sure to hydrate effectively regardless of what you might be up to throughout this week.

On the topic of being ready for the heat, we also wanted to point out that September is National Preparedness Month.
