Good afternoon, Athens! If you walked outside today, then you probably noticed an absolutely beautiful day! This morning, we experienced temperatures getting awfully close to the 50s (in Georgia?), with the low being 61, and today we had high temperatures today that hit 4-5 degrees below average for this time of year. This pattern is much nicer compared to last week when well above average temperatures dominated the southeast.
North Georgians can thank a unique weather phenomenon, that meteorologists commonly refer to as "the wedge", for these comfortable conditions that have taken over northeast Georgia. A relatively strong high-pressure system hanging out in the New England area is bringing nice cool air from the north down the east coast of the United States. This cool air would miss us if it weren't for the Appalachian Mountains, which blocks the airflow and redirects it towards the south and into Georgia, bringing us well below average temperatures!
Unfortunately, heading toward late week, the wedge will start to break down slightly due to a disturbance making its way up from the Gulf of Mexico which will bring us some rain showers beginning sometime Friday afternoon and stretching into the overnight hours, but the exact timing is to be determined. We'll still continue to see temperatures hanging out in the lower 80s and even the low 70s in some parts of north Georgia. Lows will balance in the low 60s for the rest of the week, potentially the 50s in some spots. Overall, we can expect the fall temperatures to stay in the forecast for the foreseeable future!
