A Warm and Wet Weekend Ahead

Today in Athens we have been warm and humid with mostly cloudy skies, which is similar to the rest of the North Georgia area. With high temperatures into the the low 90s today and dewpoints into the 70s, it will feel hot and humid for the rest of day. Unfortunately, this trend will be continuing as we go into Saturday and Sunday as temperatures will climb near the mid 90s for Athens by the end of this weekend with dewpoints lingering in the 70s. Heat indexes will be close to triple digits throughout the weekend because of this.

Along with this increased surface moisture is partly to mostly cloudy skies for most of the weekend which will result in summertime pop-up thunderstorms across our region. As a rule of thumb, the farther south you are in our region, the higher your rain chances are, but percentages are still below 50% for most of our region. Some of these storms could be strong as instability values are favorable for heavy, short-lived downpours along with gusty winds up to 40 miles per hour. These storms will be scattered in nature.

By Sunday evening, a line of storms caused by a cold front will be moving through our region. Some of these storms could cause strong downpours and gusty winds, but as of now, the risk for severe weather is very low. The chances this line of storms stick together to impact our whole region is also low, so these storms could also be scattered in nature. These chances could change as we get closer to the event, so we will keep you updated if anything changes.
