Multiple Rounds of Heavy Thunderstorms Expected Today.

Justin Williams

With cold air wedging in from the northeast along with warm air coming in from the south, North Georgia will be a battleground for thunderstorms today. With surface dewpoints above 70 degrees and instability values increasing as we go into the afternoon, we can expect multiple rounds of thunderstorms for our region that will stretch into the overnight hours. These storms are not particularly fast either, they are slow and significant producers of rainfall, some of which could produce 2-3 inches of rainfall per hour. As a result, flash flooding will be possible for our region. These storms are widespread, and will bring widespread rainfall of at least an inch for our region, with some areas seeing close to 4 inches, depending on where the heaviest thunderstorms decide to set up. It is unlikely that these storms will turn severe this afternoon, but a stray severe thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, especially with the more efficient rainfall producers. The main severe modes possible today and tonight will be flooding and straight line wind gusts up to 60 mph. Most storms will be out of our region by 3am tonight

Some of North Georgia may not even see the 80s today as multiple rounds of thunderstorms keep them cool. By mid afternoon, most of us will be cool, floating in the mid and upper 70s as storms from the west make their way into our region. By the time these storms make their way out of our region tonight, we will be sitting in the lower 70s for your overnight lows. Another round of thunderstorms will be expected during the morning commute tomorrow in Northwest Georgia. This system will move east/southeast throughout our region bringing scattered thunderstorms throughout the early part of the day, eventually moving out of our region in the afternoon. It is likely tomorrow will be warmer than today, along with less overall rainfall totals, but highs will struggle to reach past the mid 80s tomorrow for much of our region due to lingering clouds and spotty rainfall. There will be a chance for isolated thunderstorms tomorrow overnight, with low temperatures lingering in the low 70s.

Looking further ahead into this week, the stationary upper level trough is expected to kick out by Wednesday, which means an end to the stormy weather is on the horizon. It also means a ridge from the sub-tropical jet stream will take its place, which means another round of hot weather is on the way. By Wednesday, temperatures will be in the mid 90s, and by the end of the week, temperatures will claw into the upper 90s.
