Wet Rest of the Week

Happy Tuesday evening Athens and North Georgia! Quite an exciting week ahead of us due to Tropical Storm Helene down in the Caribbean. The storm is expected to make landfall on the Florida panhandle around 8 pm Thursday night. It is a fast-moving system and has the potential to intensify rapidly due to very warm Gulf waters. It is expected to go straight up through Georgia as well.

Looking at Athens, we can expect a low of 70 degrees tonight. There's a 20% chance of rain throughout the night. Our high tomorrow will be around 80. Tomorrow we will experience rain from a phenomenon called Predecessor Rain Events (PREs). Tropical systems/hurricanes often generate heavy rain ahead of the main storm.

North Georgia will see a low of 68 tonight and a 40% chance of rain. The effects from the PRE will begin around 8 am tomorrow keeping the high around 75.

Since Georgia will be wet due to the PRE before Helene reaches us, flooding will be a great concern for us. A flood watch will go into effect for Athens tomorrow afternoon. Keep those umbrellas and rain jackets on hand for the rest of the week, we're going to need it! Winds will be a concern as well, but later in the week.

Stay dry, stay safe, and GO DAWGS!!
