A Winter Storm in Athens

Good evening, Dawgs! The University of Georgia's first week of classes is off to a chilly start, and it's only going to get colder. An unprecedented snowstorm will be moving into Athens on Friday morning. Impacts begin just after sunrise, somewhere between 6:00-9:00 am. We can expect a snowy start to the day and later on a transition to sleet/freezing rain as well as stronger winds. In addition to these conditions, there is a plethora of hazards, especially with transportation, power outages, and downed trees. And even though the event will have passed by Saturday morning, the impacts will continue to affect North Georgia. As of right now, we advise all North Georgia residents to exercise caution on the roads on Friday morning because the snow will begin to stick immediately. In addition, have extra food and water on hand in case of power outages.

But before the storm comes, we will take a look at the short-term forecast for Athens. Tonight we will drop down to 21 degrees. We expect light wind overnight as well as into tomorrow. Due to this wind, Athens will reach a high of 44 degrees. The sky will be relatively clear throughout the day, with clouds moving in later on. But don't let the sun fool you; it will still be very cold, so dress more!

We will continue to update everyone as the event draws closer. For now, stay warm and Go Dawgs!
