As we make our way through Thursday evening, scattered thunderstorms are dotting the state. These storms have brought temperatures in the Athens area from the low 90s down to the low 80s.
Temperatures will continue to drop overnight: Athens can expect a low in the low 70s, and areas further north can expect lows in the upper 60s. Rain chances will end after midnight, leaving North Georgia mostly cloudy for Friday morning commutes.
Clouds will stick aroud to begin the day tomorrow, but you'll want to have an umbrella handy by the time you leave work. Scattered thunderstorms will return to the Athens area mid-afternoon, with more widespread storms in central Georgia pushing south and east through the evening. These cloudy, rainy conditions will keep temperatures relatively cool for late August, with highs in the low 80s stretching across North Georgia.
North Georgia, including the Atlanta metro and Athens, are under a Marginal Risk for Excessive Rainfall through Saturday, while areas south of the I-20 corridor are in a higher Slight Risk. In heavy downpours, communities stretching from Macon to Savannah could see 3 to 5 inches of rain. Localized flash flooding is possible - please stay weather aware this weekend.
While the weekend forecast looks gloomy, relief from the humid, rainy weather is on its way. A strong cold front will move through early next week. By midweek, highs will be in the low 80s and lows will be in the mid 60s, accompanied by sunshine and no chance for rain. Enjoy this "false fall" while it's here!
Stay safe and stay dry this weekend, Dawgs!
