Record-Breaking Heat

It's been a dreary day here in Athens, with persistent cloud cover and temperatures failing to break 60 degrees. You can thank "The Wedge" for these conditions - cold air funneling down from the Appalachian Mountains has kept the northeastern corner of the state cooler than areas to our west. Starting tomorrow, we will see a significant shift in these temperatures, warming to almost 20 degrees above average by the end of the week.

Overnight, Athens and the greater North Georgia area will stay cloudy as lows drop to the upper 40s. We can't rule out the chance for patchy fog, especially on the eastern side of the state, so make sure you turn those headlights on and stay weather-aware for your morning commute. Cloud cover will slowly break up through the afternoon tomorrow as temperatures climb to the low 70s.

Sunny skies and a more dramatic spike in temperatures will come Thursday and Friday, with highs projected to break 80. Keep an eye on those temperatures - Athens' record highs of 81 (set in 1955) for Thursday and 82 (set in 1974) for Friday could easily be broken. We will stay unseasonably warm through the weekend, despite the chance for scattered thunderstorms rolling in on Saturday.

Stay tuned for more on rain chances this weekend. In the meantime, enjoy this early taste of Spring, Dawgs!
