Today, the Athens area is under a heat advisory as feels like temperatures are already exceeding 100 degrees. As for the rest of the region, actual high temperatures near 100 degrees have been achieved for much of northwest Georgia, while the rest of us have remained in the low 90s. Dewpoints and humidity values however increase as you go south in our region, from the upper 60s in northwest Georgia to the mid to upper 70s just south of the Atlanta Metro area. As a result, feels like temperatures have been well into triple digits for much of our region, despite the temperature differences.
This warm and moist airmass sitting over our region will result in pop-up showers and thunderstorms as we go into the evening time. Most of these thunderstorms will stay west of Atlanta and move north clipping the northwest part of our region. As a rule of thumb for tonight, rain chances increase the more northwest you are in the region. Most of these thunderstorms will not be severe, but a brief severe thunderstorm producing strong wind gusts and small hail cannot be ruled out tonight. These storms will be moving out of our area by midnight tonight.
The heat is expected to return tomorrow, as most of the region will climb into the mid 90s tomorrow with dewpoints lingering in the 70s for much of the region. A heat advisory will most likely return for some of us tomorrow as feels like temperatures will once again soar above 100 degrees. Much of the region will be under mostly to partly cloudy skies allowing for our region to see plenty of sun, but a few isolated showers and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out mid day tomorrow for our region.
Looking into your week ahead, most of us will stay dry with small rainfall percentages persisting for most of the region, but a few pop up thunderstorms through out the week cannot be ruled out. Wednesday is looking to be the coolest day of the week, with most of us in the low 90s, but a warming trend is expected as we go into your weekend with high temperatures near 100 degrees expected next Sunday.
