Good evening, Athens and North Georgia!
Looking back at how Monday felt, it must feel like summer out there today as Athens hit a high of 66 degrees this afternoon, while the majority of North Georgia was able to reach into the 60s, with the exception of some of the higher elevations that were stuck in the 50s. With west-northwesterly winds gusting up to 20mph at times, a chill was definitely felt, especially when standing in shaded areas. When looking at tonight's temperatures, we look to crash again, ranging from the 30s north and 40s south across North Georgia. Overall, however, it was and will continue to be a beautiful day across the entirety of the viewing area!
It should also be noted when looking at tonight's forecast that a geomagnetic storm watch has been posted by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center! The final coronal mass ejection (CME) has erupted from the sun, and at this moment, it has an unknown amount of magnetic energy associated with it. Even without knowing this, there were reports all the way into Florida last night of Aurora Borealis sightings. 10 pm-2 am local time allows for the best viewing, as well as an area that has no light pollution.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Athens and North Georgia will continue to stay beautiful with temperatures on the rise. Areas further to the north will stay in the mid-60s, while Athens might be able to eclipse the 70-degree mark. Lows overnight tomorrow will be slightly warmer, but still look to remain chilly in the 40s for most, while the higher terrain continues to stay cooler in the 30s.
The extended forecast calls for much of the same, with temperatures and clear skies continuing into the weekend as the Bulldogs take on the Longhorns here in Athens at 7:30 pm on Saturday. Temperatures at kickoff, however, might call for a light jacket! Keep an eye on the end of the month heading into December, as things look to start to take a turn back towards potential cold!
Everyone, enjoy your evening and go dawgs!
Gavin Herren.
