Winter Isn't Over Yet!

Margaret Needham

We had a warm start to February, but a late-week shift in temperatures will serve to remind us that we still have over a month of winter left.

Today, Athens enjoyed beautiful weather: mild temperatures, in the upper 50s, and not a cloud in the sky. However, cloud cover will increase as we make our way through the night, making for a cloudy sunrise. These clouds will keep our overnight low a bit warmer than we've seen so far this week, in the mid 30s. Along with this increase in clouds will come a round of morning showers: rain will begin around the time of your morning commute and move out after noon.

North Georgia also enjoyed sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s today. Overnight, you'll see a story similar to Athens: clouds moving in before sunrise, along with widespread, light showers. Expect a low in the upper 30s. Showers will move out earlier than they will for Athens, with rain chances ending around midmorning.

While most of North Georgia, including the Atlanta Metro, will only experience a miserable, cold rain, a wintry mix becomes possible moving further north, with elevated locations seeing the chance for a dusting of snow. A line approximately from Rome to Gainesville marks the cutoff for wintry precipitation, with counties to the north of this line placed under a Winter Weather Advisory. Areas above 2000 feet could see a half inch to an inch of snow. Roads throughout the day on Wednesday will be slick - please drive slowly and cautiously.

Following the mix of rain and snow early Wednesday, skies will begin to clear and temperatures will begin to drop. By Thursday, highs in the 30s will be widespread across North Georgia. Though cold, we won't have to worry about precipitation for a while - we get to enjoy sunny skies through the weekend!

Grab your umbrella tomorrow, make sure you have your coat for the rest of the week. Stay warm and, as always, Go Dawgs!
